Monique Lewis is busy. Her retina practice can see up to 85 patients a day, and she’s studying to receive a Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technologists (COMT) certification from The Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO). Additionally, she was recently awarded a scholarship from Local Eye Site to support her COMT certification.
We caught up with Monique on how to move up the ladder in ophthalmology, and what her day-to-day life is like as an COMT in training.
What kind of training have you done so far for the career you have?
My formal training was courtesy of the United States Air Force. I attended a training course that was approximately five months with additional training at Willford Hall Medical Center at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. I have also completed the Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) certification at a home study course.
What drove you to a career in ophthalmology?
I choose ophthalmology as my career field in the military as the description seemed interesting.
Where do you work now and what is your typical workday like?
I currently work for Southern Vitreoretinal Associates. They specialize in retinal disease. Our days are super busy as a sub-specialty practice. We currently see anywhere from 65-85 patients a day. Most of our patients are diabetic or have age-related macular degeneration so our physicians do a good bit of treatment.
What is next for you? What are a few of your professional goals?
I am very excited to obtain more certification. I think it’s important to show that you have a standardized level of learning and the grant I’ve received will bring me one step closer to my ultimate goal of obtaining my COMT certification.
Monique’s unwavering determination in seeking out advanced professional development makes her an eye care all-star. We applaud career growth and are proud to supply the resources and jobs that result in that critical step up. We’re also so happy to have skilled professionals in our network, working with a growth-mindset, and really offering value to employers.
